From humble beginnings in 2013, Jula Logistics has grown into a major logistics player, recently investing half a billion SEK into the Skaraborg Logistics Center.

- We started with half-length trains three days a week, primarily with Jula volumes. The initial goal was to create more sustainable transport, says Lennart Karlsson, CEO of Jula Logistics.

Soon after, they signed a lease-to-own agreement with Falköping Municipality—and five years later, Jula Logistics took full ownership of the terminal. Today, the logistics center includes five rail tracks, three full-size terminal facilities, and a large warehouse with platform and steel hall.

Train frequency is increasing. Falköping is now part of Samskip’s European shuttle network, with a Luleå–Falköping service five days a week and a new Sundsvall shuttle just launched. Together, they represent 15–16 loops weekly. But the most important destination remains the Port of Gothenburg.

- Our container shuttle has grown to 9–10 departures per week and continues to expand. We’ve also started wagonload services to Gothenburg—currently five departures weekly, and we expect a strong increase there as well, says Karlsson.

By 2025, projections suggest around 40 weekly train departures to and from Falköping. This is driven by rising exports of Swedish raw materials like paper, metal, and timber, and major nearby importers like Jula and Mio.

- We’ve built a solid base and see strong synergies by linking wagonload trains from the north with our container shuttles to export globally. We’re building an extension of the Port of Gothenburg. That’s the journey we’ve made—and we see the potential to continue it.

Jula Logistics has also built its own charging infrastructure and installed 8.5 megawatts of solar panels to power its electric vehicles.

- We aim to not only produce but also secure our energy supply, to become fully self-sufficient and accelerate our transition to fossil-free logistics. And we want to extend our container shuttles with electric last-mile transport to every customer. says Lennart Karlsson.

They’ve already ordered 20 electric trucks from Scania, co-developed with Jula Logistics. Karlsson’s commitment to cutting-edge sustainability is clear.

Jula Logistics values its partnership with the Port of Gothenburg.

- We’ve figured out what both parties are good at. The Port should turn goods around as fast as possible—ideally using rail. Relocating parts of the operation to Falköping allows both of us to grow more effectively. I often say, we are Gothenburg East.

And it’s not about competition, Karlsson stresses. Their logistics solutions complement the Port’s unmatched capacity for global freight movement.

- Direct trains to Gothenburg are crucial. Getting cargo straight into the port and avoiding delays is vital for cutting costs and cycle times. Two loops a day is easy—and we could even manage three. Plus, we can book ad hoc time slots with short notice and access the mainline when demand is lower.

Only a handful of departures have ever been cancelled, and unexpected issues are mitigated by flexibility and strong local political support for rail.

- That makes the end result really good.

Jula Logistics is part of the Jula Group, with Jula AB as its largest customer—but Karlsson’s passion for the entire region is evident.

- We’re from Skara, but we’re a Skaraborg company. Creating value for the region is essential for us. That vision is always at the core of what we do, he concludes.
