Work on the Skandia Gateway project continues to make clear progress. During February, several key parts of the quay structure were completed, marking an important phase in the project. Despite periods of winter conditions, production has maintained a steady pace. At the same time, the new quay is now beginning to take shape, making the scale and impact of the project increasingly visible.
An important milestone has been reached as the foundation works are now completed. This includes the land beam, embankment piling and anchoring system, providing a solid base for the next stages of construction.
In total, 232 pre-drillings have been carried out and 261 steel piles installed in various dimensions, with a combined length exceeding 9,900 metres.
Work on sheet piling and tubular piles has also entered a new phase. All stages are now completed following a period of high production combined with technical challenges. Ground conditions and obstacles in the soil have at times affected the work, but through continuous adjustments and a solution-oriented approach, progress has been maintained.
Post-installation works are continuing at a good pace, supported by close collaboration between contractors, resulting in an efficient and well-functioning workflow.
In parallel with the foundation works, construction of concrete structures is progressing. Several concrete pours have been completed across different parts of the quay, while reinforcement, hydrodemolition and installation of substructures are ongoing.
Work on corrosion protection and fixings in the sheet pile structures is now intensifying and being carried out on multiple fronts. An additional work front is planned to be introduced shortly to further increase production pace.
Ground and utility works are progressing according to plan. Stormwater pipes and water supply lines have been installed, fire hydrants put in place, and backfilling carried out across several sections of the site.
At the same time, work related to port infrastructure is advancing, with several structures being completed and preparations underway for upcoming installations.
Winter conditions have required additional efforts, including snow clearance and measures to prevent ice formation in the water area, such as the use of bubble curtains.
With the foundation phase completed, the project is now moving into its next stage. The focus will be on continuing the construction of the quay through concrete works, corrosion protection and completion of sheet pile solutions, while ground and installation works continue in parallel.
As more parts of the structure are completed, the overall ambition of the project becomes increasingly clear. Skandia Gateway is a long-term investment aimed at strengthening the Port of Gothenburg’s role as a logistics hub and meeting future demands for larger vessels, more efficient flows and reduced climate impact.
The work now continues with a strong focus on collaboration, safety and sustainability, step by step towards a modern and future-proof port.
