The new Lövholmen intermodal terminal in Piteå recently celebrated its first year of operation. With a strategic location next to the E4 highway and major industries in the area, combined with growing capacity and departure frequency to and from the Port of Gothenburg, it aims to become a northern transport hub accessible to the entire region’s business community.

The terminal, owned by Stenvalls Trä, was initially established to meet the transportation needs of its own operations. The majority of the volumes still consist of sawn and planed timber from Stenvalls’ four sawmills in the region.

Goods are transported from the sawmills by truck and quickly and efficiently stuffed into containers using a load plate at the Lövholmen terminal. From there, the containers are shipped by rail to the Port of Gothenburg, where they are loaded onto connecting vessels bound for markets in Asia, the USA, and Southern Europe.

Over time, more cargo owners from a variety of industries in the region have discovered the opportunities the terminal offers. These businesses have been welcomed, and the terminal has gradually begun handling a more diverse mix of goods beyond forestry products – a development Roger Bergman, Marketing Manager at Stenvalls Trä, hopes to see grow further.

- We want to be an open terminal for the entire region’s industries, which we deeply care about. We are by no means exclusive to Stenvalls Trä; we have the capacity, expertise, and willingness to handle larger and more diversified volumes. And we’ve already seen the beginning of that, says Bergman.

When operations began a year ago, there was one departure to and from the Port of Gothenburg. The frequency quickly increased to two round trips, and there are plans to further increase departures in the future. The transport to the Port of Gothenburg takes 23 hours, and since the launch, 93% of the trains have arrived within a two-hour margin.

The terminal is equipped with modern machinery, including a load plate for container stuffing and reach stackers for handling all types of cargo, including hazardous goods, tanks, trailers, and containers. The terminal collaborates closely with APM Terminals, which operates the port’s container terminal, TFK Logistics and Hector Rail for rail transport, and Träfraktkontoret for booking connecting sea transport.

"It’s a collaboration that has worked incredibly well from the start. Stenvalls is very forward-thinking, agile, and solution-oriented, and APM Terminals are experts in flexible and efficient handling between trains and ships. Together, we offer a total concept that’s hard to beat”
- Kim Johansson, CEO of TFK Logistics

Lövholmen Multimodal Terminal is part of Railport Scandinavia, an extensive rail network of nearly 30 inland terminals. With frequent departures, it transports goods to and from the Port of Gothenburg from across Sweden. The port’s comprehensive ocean liner network ensures the business community’s access to global markets.
