April saw significant progress in the quay works within the Skandia Gateway project. Foundation work, sheet piling, and concrete casting have proceeded according to plan, driven by a fast pace and strong commitment from all parties involved. More than 750 concrete piles and 300 steel piles have been installed, along with the casting of 90 pile caps—with more underway.
From week 19, the sheet piling work will shift to a multi-shift schedule, allowing for even faster production. Preparations are also ongoing for continued piling, reinforcement and groundworks in several sections of the area.
Sheet piling and pipe installation
Installation of AZ36-type sheet piles has continued westward, with a total of 141.4 metres (crest length) of sheet piles installed (101 double sheets). In addition, 191 tubular piles have been installed. Further drilling westward is scheduled for mid-May, and preparations for the next sheet piling phases are underway.
Foundation and piling work
Over 187 steel piles have been drilled and installed for the landside beam, along with 751 concrete piles for the embankment area. In addition, 324 steel piles have been installed for the embankment structure and 202 steel piles for tie-back anchoring. This means the majority of foundation work scheduled for April has been completed as planned.
Concrete works
A total of 90 pile caps have been cast. The landside beam has progressed with four base slabs and three beam sections completed. Injection and tension testing of the tie-back rods has also started. Work along the quay line is ongoing in several areas, including preparations for reinforcement installation.
Earthworks
Approximately 93% of the excavation, bedding and backfilling for the embankment pile cap foundations in section 0/270–0/599 is now complete. Extensive pre-excavation has also been carried out in preparation for continued drilling and piling of both the landside beam and tie-back structures. Ongoing service works continue to support the other disciplines on site.
Safety first
In May, NCC will hold its Health and Safety Week (week 21), with a focus on heavy machinery and shared safety culture. A survey on well-being and working environment will also be distributed.
Focus on sustainable development
New climate assessments show a significant reduction in climate impact due to the use of renewable fuel (HVO100) and environmentally declared materials (EPDs). Compared to the original calculations, CO₂ emissions have been reduced by over 10,000 tonnes.
