Fairway deepening project underway

Monday marked a historic milestone for the Port of Gothenburg as ground was broken for the Skandia Gateway project. The quay reinforcement and fairway deepening initiative, which has been on the port's planning table for over a decade, further strengthens the port's ability to serve Sweden's export and import industries.
Preliminary work, including excavation and diving operations, had already begun when representatives from the port, the shipping industry, cargo owners, and policymakers gathered at the far end of the quay at Skandia Harbour – the Port of Gothenburg’s container terminal. The event celebrated the launch of this long-anticipated project, which carries significant value for Sweden’s logistics and economy.
– When this project is completed at the turn of 2027-2028, Swedish industry will have improved transport conditions and stronger connections to the rest of the world. This will enhance Sweden’s competitiveness, which is the driving force and vision for us at the Port of Gothenburg.

Infrastructure and Housing Minister Andreas Carlson was also among the attendees and emphasized the project's importance for Sweden's development as an export-driven industrial nation:
– This is particularly vital because Sweden is a highly export-dependent industrial country. Shipping and ports play a key role in ensuring continued growth, creating more jobs, and achieving it in a climate-conscious way that helps us reach our ambitious climate goals.
