Skandia Gateway takes shape – strong progress and sustainability in focus

The quay construction within the Skandia Gateway project continues at full speed, and during February we made important progress. The quay reinforcement and foundation work are proceeding according to plan, while we continue to ensure sustainability and environmental consideration in every stage. Here is an up-to-date report on the developments at Skandiahamnen and what lies ahead.
Environment and sustainability – protecting marine ecosystems
As part of our comprehensive environmental work, we conduct regular water quality measurements to ensure that our construction activities do not negatively affect the marine ecosystem. Turbidity monitoring has shown that our work does not cause increased turbidity around the eelgrass meadows near Älvsborg and Tångudden. As a result, we have now received approval to end most of these measurements, except for those related to excavation work behind the sheet piles, which will be completed in March.
Project documentation
To track the Skandia Gateway throughout the entire construction process, the project is being continuously documented through film and photography. This provides valuable insight into the project’s progress and creates a visual and factual record of how the port’s infrastructure is being strengthened and modernized. The documentation will also serve as a valuable resource for future analysis and learning in large-scale port development projects.
Technical progress and construction milestones
In February, we continued the installation of piles and sheet piles along the quay line to strengthen the structure. The current progress includes:
Foundation Work: A total of 108 steel piles have been driven for the land beam, equaling 3,541 meters. Additionally, 751 concrete piles and 324 steel piles have been installed for the foundation area behind the quay.
Sheet Pile Installation: We have installed 28 meters of sheet pile, with some sections anchored to the bedrock for increased stability.
Pipe Piles: A total of 125 pipe piles have been installed so far, with an additional 314 planned for 2025. In March, follow-up work will begin to cut, machine, and fill the piles with concrete.
Next step
With a steady construction pace and continued focus on sustainability, we look forward to the next phases of the Skandia Gateway project. The coming months will include continued sheet pile and foundation work, as well as preparations for the next major stage of the development.
Another major step will be the selection of a contractor for the fairway deepening. The dredging contract is currently out for tender, with contract award planned for September. Dredging work is scheduled to begin after the summer of 2026.
