Waggeryds Cell has plenty of sustainable reasons to choose rail

With the plant just three kilometers from the Båramo terminal, Waggeryds Cell ships daily volumes directly to the Port of Gothenburg fast, efficient, and sustainable by rail.

Article in short

  • Waggeryds Cell produces BCTMP pulp used mainly in packaging like juice and milk cartons.

  • Around 100,000 tons per year are transported by rail, replacing 4,000 truck journeys.

  • The proximity to the Båramo terminal enables fast, efficient, and sustainable exports via direct trains to the Port of Gothenburg.

  • Direct rail eliminates the need for extra handling, reducing the risk of damage and delays.

  • Customers benefit from faster deliveries, while the company lowers its environmental impact and logistics costs.

Waggeryds Cell produces BCTMP, a mechanical pulp primarily used as the middle layer in cartonboard and similar products. Simply put, it’s the stuff in your juice and milk cartons.

“Today, we produce 200,000 tons per year, with a permit for 225,000 tons. We’re constantly working to optimize our process to reach that goal,” says Henrik Karlsson, Sales Manager at Waggeryds Cell.

About half of the production – around 100,000 tons – is transported by rail. Containers are loaded and sealed in Vaggeryd and remain closed until they reach the end customer.

“By switching from road to rail, we’ve cut 4,000 truckloads from the roads. We even received an award for that"

The shift to rail has been a major sustainability win and simplified logistics: all exports to Asia now travel just three kilometers by truck before boarding a train that goes straight to the Port of Gothenburg and a waiting vessel.

Karlsson also highlights other sustainability benefits from the company’s ongoing process optimization. For instance, they’ve recently connected to the municipal district heating network so that the plant’s waste heat benefits local residents.

Back to rail: while occasional delays due to weather may occur, rail remains a reliable transport mode for Waggeryds Cell. Karlsson would welcome more rail options, especially for Swedish customers currently served by truck. Still, he’s very pleased with the current export setup.

“Rail is a very good and stable product. The fact that Båramo is just three kilometers away gives us great flexibility. We ship large daily volumes and need to reach the rest of the world. The direct train to the Port of Gothenburg ensures a fast, cost-effective flow with less environmental impact than traditional road freight,” he explains.

“The direct trains are crucial, especially since our customers want their products as quickly as possible. Not having to reload from truck at the port also reduces the risk of cargo damage.”

The same benefits apply to the importance of direct shipping routes between Gothenburg and Asia.

“The sea is the only route to Asia. Since our customers want the pulp as soon as possible, direct sailings save time. It also simplifies logistics, reduces port stops, and minimizes delay risks,” Karlsson concludes.
