Year in review from the Skandia Gateway project!

2024 has been a year filled with significant progress and collaboration within the Skandia Gateway project. A joint working organization between the Port of Gothenburg and NCC has been established at the Skandiahamnen terminal. Together, we have invested great effort into building new structures and preparing for the upcoming phases. We've also prioritized creating a safe and sustainable work environment, something we are all proud of. After a frustrating delay in the project's initiation, construction finally began in February 2024. For everyone involved, it was a fantastic milestone – finally breaking ground 11 years after the first investigation, which eventually became known as the Skandia Gateway.
The first half of the year was largely dedicated to mobilizing resources, establishing the organization, implementing routines and processes, starting construction, and, most importantly, getting to know each other on-site. Now, one year into the construction, we are struck by the tremendous interest we encounter in the Skandia Gateway project. Many people – employees, politicians, partners, media, and residents of Gothenburg – are eager to know how the project is progressing. Our response is, “It’s going well; we’re staying on schedule and within budget.” This creates a sense of calm, knowing that the largest project at the Port of Gothenburg since the 1960s is proceeding according to plan. Of course, this doesn’t mean there are no challenges. Issues arise continuously, but the collaboration model we’ve chosen for the quay work – known as partnering with NCC – has proven highly effective, promising a smooth execution for the remainder of the project. Another positive development is that the Swedish Maritime Administration has issued a tender for dredging the fairway, which will commence in 2026.
Work completed
The year began with establishing the work organization at Sveas Kulle and along the quay. Preparations for piling and excavation were carried out, including the demolition of concrete slabs and quay equipment and extensive excavation work. This was followed by piling work for anchoring, foundation piles, and the land beam. In the fall, the installation of AZ sheet piles and pipe piles also commenced. All these tasks are significant milestones that have progressed as expected.
Work environment
Throughout the year, the project has focused on the work environment as a key priority. Through several dedicated focus weeks, we identified and addressed potential deficiencies, leading to improved routines and safety measures for everyone. Thanks to feedback and engagement from all involved, we’ve created a safer workplace. Several safety drills were conducted, including simulations of injured diver rescues, which have been crucial in strengthening preparedness. Additionally, NCC’s annual Health and Safety Week featured a rescue drill focusing on falls into water and heavy lifting. In September, we hosted an Awareness Day themed "We work safely or not at all," using workshops and discussions to reinforce safety culture and awareness of prioritizing safety in every task.
Environmental efforts
Environmental work has been another key pillar of the Skandia Gateway project this year. In accordance with the environmental permit, turbidity measurements were conducted during activities near the quay. Results confirmed that turbidity levels did not exceed the established limits near the eelgrass meadows. Thanks to our collective efforts, no spread of suspended materials or impact on sensitive marine environments was detected. This marks a significant step forward for the project, ensuring that the work complies with all regulatory requirements.
Looking ahead
In January, ongoing activities will continue, with concrete work focusing on foundation piling and pile caps. Excavation and reinforcement work on the pile caps will also proceed. Meanwhile, counterweights for form wagons will be produced, and work platforms for drilling and injecting reinforcement into the sea beam will be installed. These tasks are essential to creating a solid foundation for the upcoming phases of the project. Sheet piling work along the quay will also continue. Early next year, the installation of the floating sheet pile wall and the double anchoring of the sheet pile wall will begin. Additional piling work for the land beam, foundation piling, and anchoring will also progress.
